    Class II
    Electric motor narrow-aisle truck
    29 CFR 1910.178

Covered by 29 CFR 1910.178(l) — elevated platform also triggers fall-protection rules under 1910.140.

What makes order pickers different from other forklifts

    • The operator platform elevates with the load — up to 30+ feet.
    • Fall protection (harness + lanyard anchored to the platform) is required whenever the platform is raised.
    • Steering is done from the elevated platform, not the ground.
    • Load and operator weight combine to shift the truck's center of gravity dramatically.
    • Pedestrian and rack-collision risk grows at height due to reduced visibility.

OSHA topics covered in our order picker course

    • Pre-shift inspection with elevated-platform focus.
    • Fall protection: harness fit, lanyard length, anchor points.
    • Traveling with the platform lowered vs elevated.
    • Load stability at height and rack contact avoidance.
    • Emergency lower/descent procedures.
    • Battery safety and platform gate interlocks.

    Frequently asked questions

Is fall protection required on an order picker?
Yes. OSHA requires operators on elevated order picker platforms to use a full-body harness and lanyard anchored to the platform anchor point.
Is an order picker the same as a cherry picker?
In warehouse context yes — 'cherry picker' is a common name for stock/order pickers. In construction, 'cherry picker' can also refer to a boom lift, which requires separate aerial lift training.
Does OSHA Operator cover order pickers?
Yes. Our Class II training includes order picker operation. $69 per operator covers Classes 1–6.
