Free forklift certification: what is really free

Forklift certification can be free to you when your employer trains and evaluates you in-house, because OSHA makes the employer responsible for it. Free online courses usually cover only part of the formal instruction. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) also requires practical training and a hands-on evaluation, which no website can do for you.

Can you get forklift certified for free?

Yes, in one common situation: when your employer trains you. OSHA's rule requires the employer to ensure each operator is competent, trained and evaluated (1910.178(l)(1)). Many employers run their own training with a qualified in-house trainer, and the operator pays nothing.

Outside of that, a truly free, complete certification is rare. A website can give you free study material, but it cannot complete the practical evaluation on your truck, and certification under 1910.178(l)(6) is done by the employer.

What free online forklift courses usually leave out

Before signing up for a free offer, check what you actually get. Free offers often charge for the certificate or wallet card at the end, cover only general safety topics, or skip the topic list in 1910.178(l)(3).

    • Is there a final exam, and what does a retake cost?
    • Is a certificate included, or is it an extra fee?
    • Does the course cover the truck-related and workplace-related topics in 1910.178(l)(3)?
    • Do you get an evaluation form for your employer?
    • Can an employer verify the certificate?
