How long is a forklift certification good for?
Updated August 2026 — reviewed against current OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 requirements
Accepted by employers in all 50 states · 3-year certificate validity
The four early-expiration triggers
- The operator is involved in an accident or near-miss incident.
- A supervisor observes the operator driving unsafely.
- The operator is assigned a different class of powered industrial truck.
- Workplace conditions change in a way that affects safe operation.
What renewal actually involves
Renewal is not a full re-do of the original program. It is refresher instruction on the relevant topics plus a fresh evaluation of performance, documented the same way as the original.
Tracking expiry across a team
For teams, the practical risk is a lapse nobody noticed. The employer dashboard lists every operator's evaluation date and flags renewals coming due in the next 90 days.
Frequently asked questions
- Does the certificate expire or the evaluation?
- Technically the evaluation. The three-year clock runs from the date of the last documented performance evaluation.
- Does certification transfer to a new employer?
- The formal instruction carries over, but the new employer must perform and document its own evaluation on its own equipment.
- What happens if it lapses?
- The operator must stop operating until refresher training and a new evaluation are completed. Operating with a lapsed evaluation is a citable violation.
