Updated August 2026 — reviewed against current OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 requirements
Accepted by employers in all 50 states · 3-year certificate validity
The seven OSHA classes
- Class 1 — electric motor rider trucks.
- Class 2 — electric motor narrow-aisle trucks (reach trucks, order pickers).
- Class 3 — electric motor hand or hand/rider trucks (pallet jacks, walkies).
- Class 4 — internal combustion engine trucks with cushion tires.
- Class 5 — internal combustion engine trucks with pneumatic tires.
- Class 6 — electric and internal combustion engine tractors.
- Class 7 — rough-terrain forklift trucks (not covered by this course).
How to document multiple truck types
Run one evaluation per class the operator will use and note the class on each form. A warehouse operator who runs both a sit-down and a reach truck needs two documented evaluations.
Attachments and modifications
Clamps, rotators, and slip sheets change load capacity and stability, so they require additional instruction and a fresh evaluation even on a familiar truck.
Frequently asked questions
- Do you cover Class 7 rough terrain?
- Not currently — the course covers OSHA Classes 1 through 6.
- Is a pallet jack really covered by OSHA?
- Yes. Powered pallet jacks are Class 3 powered industrial trucks and require training and evaluation.
- Does one certificate list multiple classes?
- The certificate reflects the course scope; the equipment class is recorded on each employer evaluation form.
